Understanding the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement

Australia replaced the earlier Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement with the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. Under this rule, you need to demonstrate that you're a genuine student — someone planning to study in Australia, complete your course, and use that qualification to build your future, whether that's in Australia or back home. You'll need to support this through your Statement of Purpose (SOP) and supporting documentation.

How to Meet the GS Requirement

  1. 1
Show strong ties to your home country
Family, property, or career connections that establish your genuine intent.
  2. 2
Outline a clear plan for after your studies
What you intend to do with your qualification once you complete it.
  3. 3
    Have a genuine, well-reasoned motivation
A clear reason for the specific course you're applying to.
  4. 4
    Disclose your finances clearly
Property, savings, and other assets held by you or your parents.

This is one of the areas where students most often get rejected — not because they aren't genuine, but because their SOP doesn't communicate it clearly. Our counsellors help you build documentation that does justice to your actual story.
